Store, Pricing, Ordering & Licencing

  • In 2012 why did Intermorphic change to a roughly "annual" product / pricing cycle and what does it mean?

We have always strived to deliver value for money with sensible, affordable pricing plus free updates. Unfortunately markets and models are changing ever faster (for more background see market factors), and we are trying our best to keep up with these.

The annual product lifecycle/pricing "Fullgrade" model: Coinciding with the release of Noatikl 2 (May 2012), we finally decided to bring into play a new, simpler annual product lifecycle model (we call it a "Fullgrade" model) that takes from both mobile and desktop worlds and bears some comparison to the release of a new film sequel. We are doing it because, simply put, if we don't change our commercial model, it makes it much harder for us to justify developing major new versions and features and that would not benefit those of you who enjoy our products.

    What it means:

    1. Product Lifecycle: We will aim to bring our a new major version roughly of our products every 12 to 18 months and charge for that version as were it a new product.
      • Updates to that major version during the product cycle will continue to be free, as now and as expected.
      • Customers can continue to use their licenced major version products for as long as they want to (this is called perpetual licensing) or as long as they are OS supported.
      • You can skip major versions, it is up to you!
    2. Software Pricing: The prices of major version products will be less than they would otherwise have been.
      • Major new versions of all products or in-app purchased (IAP) items will be priced at a discount to what we would otherwise have charged new users for them were we not to adopt our new model. The balancing factor is that there will then be no special upgrade pricing from previous major versions.
      • The majority of our tool users are NOT losing the benefit of loyalty as they get the new product version at, in effect, the previous upgrade price. We also hope that the lower initial price will encourage new users into the fold.
    3. Desktop Audio Plugins: Licences for Desktop Audio Plugins (i.e. for Noatikl and Mixtikl) have been separated from the Desktop Standalone versions and must be purchased separately, if required. This is primarily because Desktop Audio Plugins cannot be sold via the Mac App Store and we do not want to disadvantage Mac users when it comes to pricing.
      • The majority of desktop users seem to use either a standalone version or an audio plugin version; few seem to use or require both. This change, therefore, should (compared to the previous model) be financially neutral for most existing users. If you are a user that does use both, get the one you use most often and see how you get on with it. If you find you like it a lot, you can then make the decision whether or not to get the other version at that time.
    4. Purchase Discounts and Upgrades from previous versions:
      • Other than what is noted below, there will be no more free upgrades between major versions.
      • We will still continue to make available special offers on multiple purchases from our web store.
      • Academic versions:

        • In line with the practises of most software developers we have never provided free major version upgrades to Academic licenced products as they were already acquired at a steep discount to retail pricing.
        • Where possible, and exclusively for Academic institutions registered on Apple's Academic program, we make available our iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Apps at the App Store available for Academic pricing (as yet there seems to be no such scheme for the Mac App Store, however) . The only downside to this is that it means that there is no academic pricing available for such products except as purchased via one of these schemes.
      • Noatikl 2 purchase discounts:

        • Windows users who buy both the Noatikl 2 Desktop Standalone and Desktop Audio Plugins at the same time from our web store can get a discount on the total purchase price.
        • Mac users who purchase Noatikl 2 Desktop Standalone at the Mac App Store and then want to purchase the Noatikl Desktop Audio Plugin are not entitled to this discount, simply as we can never confirm / cross reference to the Mac App Store purchase.
      • Mixtikl 5 upgrades from Mixtikl 2-4 Desktop Full Product:

        • Windows users who previously purchased a licence to Mixtikl 2-4 Desktop Full Product and want Mixtikl 5 Desktop Standalone or Mixtikl 5 Desktop Audio plugins for Windows can get the new product for free. Just download the new versions and enter your existing product key. Please note that when we release Mixtikl 6 there will no free upgrades to Mixtikl 6.
        • Mac users who previously purchased a licence to Mixtikl 2-4 Desktop Full Product and want the Mixtikl 5 Desktop Audio plugins for Mac can get these new products for free. Just download the new versions and enter your existing product key. We are able to do this as we sell the Desktop Audio Plugins via our own store and issue licence keys. Please note that when we release Mixtikl 6 there will no free upgrades to Mixtikl 6.
        • Mac users who previously purchased a licence to Mixtikl 2-4 Desktop Full Product and want Mixtikl 5 Desktop Standalone for Mac will need to purchase it at the Mac App Store. Our free promo code has now offer closed.
    5. Market Factors:
      1. New stores make it impossible to match customers with purchases: In respect of software distribution there are significant changes happening (e.g. Apple Mac App Store [MAS], Apple iOS App Store and Amazon AppStore) which make it impossible to match customers with purchases. This spells the death knell for a paid for upgrade. Besides, even if we could match customers with purchases, there is simply no MAS/App Store upgrade mechanism. And, as yet, we have no idea what model Microsoft are going to run with with Windows8 and we don't want to penalise Mac users to the advantage of Windows users, or vice versa - a tricky balancing act. So, to recap, right now on the MAS / App Store the only way to release an upgrade that you want to charge for is to release a new product version and charge for that. There is no other option.
      2. Cost of developing "niche" products is as high as ever: Expectations from the mobile market are starting to impact the desktop software market. In mobile, it seems that many people expect more and more to be free or to cost less and less, and to have lots of free updates and feature extensions all for a purchase price which is the equivalent of a cup of coffee or two (or even nothing at all!). If you develop a big mass market game with lots of in-app purchases or advertising (the "freemium model") and have millions of customers and are venture capital funded(!) then maybe that can work for you. If, however, you develop *powerful* creativity tools like ours for a relatively small number of users and where development time is as costly as it has ever been, if not more so, then it just does not work if you only ever charge a little, and charge only once in the life of a product. We think that mobile tool developers who do continue to develop and extend them are now realising that you cannot rely on selling into an infinite market (just see how many apps rarely get any further work done on them). And, for tools like ours, in-app-purchase (IAP) may not necessarily be the right or only route (but we are looking more towards IAP). Don't get us wrong, we love doing free updates and will continue to do so, but these do not help fund further development work or product extensions.
  • I bought Mixtikl for my iPhone/iPod touch/iPad from iTunes, so can I get a discount on Mixtikl for desktop?

Apple are the only people that can sell Mixtikl for iPhone / iPod touch / iPad and they do not let us know who has purchased it, so we have no way of linking the purchases. However, the Desktop version of Mixtikl we sell is still great value!

  • A while ago I bought an IM bundle and received a number of emails with licences and download links. Why?

A bundle comprises licences for a number of different products. For example, the (nonlonger available) Mixtikl bundle inlcuded licences for Mixtikl Desktop, Tiklpak Collection 1, Tiklpak Collection 2 and Tiklpak Collection 3. Had you purchased just one of the above, then you would just have got one email. However, the way Plimus (our online store partner) does things an bundle, is that it sends out the relevant email for each element of the bundle. Please make sure you use the Product Key from the right email for your product. Note that you always download the latest software from our website, and the emails you got after the bundle purchase included licences only. When it comes to emails for the Tiklpaks, you are sent a download link.

  • I have made my purchase but have not yet been sent my Product Key or Tiklpak download links?

You should get email confirmation of your purchase soon after purchasing, and by that we means seconds, minutes or possibly (rarely) a few hours - and not days (but we have on only 2 occasions in the last 2 years bizzarely seen this kind of delay for a Paypal purchase!). In the email(s) will be the relevant Product Key(s) or Tiklpak download link(s). If for some reason you do not receive your email, or the email is missing the Product Key or Tiklpak download link (or if the Tiklpak download link has expired) PLEASE do contact us so we can sort it out for you. Very occasionally Plimus (our store partner) has had problems sending out the emails, so if you have got a problem, we want to assure you that we will sort it out for you as soon as we can!

  • A while ago I bought a Mixtikl Bundle (or Megabundle) for Mac, but got sent a licence for Mixtikl for Windows Mobile. Why?

We used to include this in the past because not every Mac user who has a mobile phone has an iPhone; some people have HTC (and other Windows Mobile based) phones etc! We included the Windows Mobile version licence for those people because we could, and we thought at that time we would be continuing with development for Windows Mobile (which we no longer are). If you did purchase earlier and it does not apply to you, just ignore it! If you do want a licence for a Windows Mobile device now, you will need to purchase it separately, as is the case with Mixtikl for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad.

Please note that if you bought a bundle, you got separate emails for each item (see FAQ entry below).

iPhone/iPod touch/iPad note: Due to Apple's rules, Apple are the only people that can sell the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad versions of Mixtikl, so we could not include a licence for it in one of our past bundles. If you want Mixtikl for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, then you need to purchase it from iTunes.

  • I am having problems entering my Product Key?

If you have purchased one of our tools, you will receive an email containing your Customer ID, Order ID and Product Key. If you are having problems getting the Product Key accepted, please try the following:

    • Close all instances of our software (including sequencers using our plugins).
    • Open the version of software for which you have purchased a license (e.g. Standalone, or specific Plugin variant), select Help > Product Key and enter your Customer ID, Order ID and Product Key. We recommend you copy and paste the Product Key and do not try to type it in.
    • Once entered, close the software and restart it.
    • Tip: Do not have any spaces at the end of the Product Key ... or at the start.
    • Problems copying/pasting Product Key?
      • Mac - To paste on the Mac, you must:
        • Right-click in the text box, OR Control-click in the text box
        • ... then select 'Paste' from the pop-up menu
        • Alternatively, click in the text box, and press Cmd-V / Applekey-V (the paste shortcut).
      • Windows - To paste on Windows, you must :
        • Right click in the text box
        • ... then select 'Paste' from the pop-up menu
        • Alternatively, click in the text box, and press Control-V (for paste).
      • We have also had problems reported from Mac users with Microsoft Entourage. The issue is that the Product Key is not being treated as plain text. Try this:
        • run TextEdit (you'll find TextEdit using Finder in the Applications folder)
        • copy the values from Entourage
        • paste the values into TextEdit (where it is set-up to be plain text, *not* RTF format!)
        • copy each value you need from TextEdit
        • paste into noatikl...!
      • See also http://intermorphic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=263.
    • Tip: If you are still having problems, please contact us and let us know the version numbered displayed in Help About (as well as OS version, how much free disk space you have, how much RAM do you have, the format of your hard disk [e.g. FAT32]).
  • Windows: Problems installing license key?

If you're running on Windows, and find that Liptikl, Mixtikl or Noatikl don't save their license key when you close the application, use the Windows option to run the program using "Run as Administrator". Enter and save your registration details. Restart the application normally: it should now be fine. If you've got trouble saving the license key for Noatikl or Mixtikl VSTi, you should run the host application (e.g. Reaper) as Administrator, set your license key details, then close the application and restart it normally.

  • Can I install Mixtikl, Noatikl, Liptikl under Linux (e.g. Ubuntu)?

Yes you can! Follow these instructions:

    • Install Wine from your normal Linux package installer.
    • Download the Liptikl / Mixtikl / Noatikl etc. zip for Windows as required.
    • Extract the downloaded zip file to your system.
    • Run the e.g. mxitikl_win_setup.exe program using Wine Windows Program Loader (right-click on the file, select the appropriate option...) ...
    • Ignore any install-time warnings you see about registering the Mixtikl browser plugin.
    • Run the standalone application - you can find this from menu Wine ->Programs -> Intermorphic (Mixtikl/Liptikl/Noatikl), or at .wine/drive_c/Program Files/intermorphic/mixtikl/mixtikl.exe (for example).
    • It should all work just fine! Noatikl however: to get output from Noatikl, will require you to configure your Linux MIDI configuration to suit - this is entirely up to the user to figure-out! - do please let us know how you get on here via our forums. See http://wiki.winehq.org/MIDI for outline instructions....
    • If you try out the Liptikl, Mixtikl or Noatikl trial versions and then decide you like it and want to continue using it - please buy a license from us! :).
    • Do let us know if you'd be willing to purchase a Linux-specific implementation of LT/NT/MT from Intermorphic.
    • NB: Files are are saved to e.g. ~/intermorphic/mixtikl/paks/User_Content/abcdefg.mixtikl.
