Mixtikl Paks

A Mixtikl Pak ("Pak") is our way of refering to a zipped collection of files ready for use by Mixtikl.

Paks are simply the easiest way for the Mixtikl community to create, package and make available their own content - and that is because they are just standard zip files. There are a number of both free and commercial tools available for making zip files.

The multimedia content in Paks can be audio, MIDI, generative music & other kinds of files as well as other elements such Mixtikl FX networks, Mixtikl files, images etc.

However - you don't have to zip up content to use it. If you just want to use content locally, maybe just to quickly try it out, you can use files, too.

Mixtikl Paks - "It's up to you"

If you have put your own content into a Pak (i.e. YOUR Pak) and want to sell it, then fine: we won't get in the way. We don't want a cut on what is yours or even a 'format' royalty. Just set up your store or get a distributor, and away you go.

If you want to give YOUR Pak above to the community for them to use for free, then go for it. The Mixtikl world is now ready and waiting to hear what you can do with community content!

If you don't make your own loops or sounds, you can still contribute to the community as a Pak maker/curator. There is a growing body of freely licensable Creative Commons content you could referencee & use within Paks - do, of course, make sure you comply with all license terms! See One Laptop Per Child project for examples of Creative Commons licensed samples.

Coming soon: You will also be able to contribute to the community by creating mixtikl.xml files where you include meta tags for the samples on loop CDs, such as those cover CDs that come with music magazines such as Computer Music. The meta tags are just descriptors like root note, tempo etc. In doing this, and making those mixtikl.xml files available for all to use, anyone who owns that CD could easily use any loop on it with Desktop Mixtikl.

Mixtikl Tiklpaks™

Tiklpaks™, prepared by Intermorphic, are a special kind of Pak. They are generally (but which do not have to be) encrypted Paks which include restrictions on how that content can be used in Mixtikl. They are for content businesses who want a little more protection on the content they make available for use in Mixtikl, and/or are branded with a quality mark (Tiklpak). Example businesses are media, record and loop companies.

We do not charge a Tiklpak "format royalty", but we do make a charge for creating them.

Benefits of Tiklpaks include:

  • mark of quality (Tiklpak brand)
  • encrypted content (optional)
  • useage restrictions (optional)
  • when user tries a shared mix on their phone or computer, any Tiklpak content not available on their phone or computer is displayed, linked to on our site (optional) and can be purchased from our online store (optional)
